Museum Interpreter (Part-Time)
Stanley-Whitman House, a National Historic Landmark in Farmington, Connecticut, seeks an enthusiastic, engaging, and dependable part-time Museum Interpreter to support the museum's educational and public programs.
Working under the direction of the Museum Educator(s) and the supervision of the Executive Director, the Museum Interpreter assists with the delivery of educational programming, guided tours, and visitor experiences for school groups, families, and adult audiences. Museum Interpreters present established interpretive programs, assist with field trips and public programs, and help ensure every visitor has a welcoming and engaging experience.
Training in the museum's history, collections, educational philosophy, and interpretive techniques will be provided.
This position is ideal for an emerging museum professional, college or graduate student, retired educator, or anyone with an interest in history, museums, education, and public engagement.
Schedule: Approximately 10–20 hours per week, primarily weekdays during school field trips, with occasional evenings and weekends for public programs and special events.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist Museum Educators with school field trips and educational programs.
• Lead guided tours of the historic house, gardens, exhibitions, and cemetery using established interpretive materials.
• Present portions of school programs and hands-on activities as assigned.
• Welcome visitors and provide excellent customer service.
• Prepare, set up, and clean up educational materials and program spaces.
• Support family programs, community events, and seasonal museum activities.
• Learn and accurately present the history of Stanley-Whitman House, its collections, and the broader history of colonial New England.
• Participate in staff training and departmental meetings as requested.
• Perform other interpretive and visitor engagement duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Interest in history, museums, education, public history, or the humanities.
• Comfortable speaking with children and adult audiences.
• Friendly, dependable, professional, and eager to learn.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small museum team.
• Experience working with children, museums, historic sites, camps, schools, or visitor services is preferred but not required.
• Coursework or a degree in history, museum studies, education, anthropology, American studies, or a related field is desirable but not required.
Compensation
Starting at $18.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Schedule
Approximately 10–20 hours per week. Most hours occur during weekday school field trips, with occasional evenings and weekends for public programs and special events.

Visitor Services Associate
Stanley-Whitman House seeks an outgoing, reliable individual to join our team.
The Visitor Services Associate serves as guests' first point of contact, ensuring a welcoming and engaging experience.
This role is responsible for front desk operations, visitor engagement, museum store sales, and supporting membership and volunteer recruitment efforts.
The ideal candidate has experience in visitor services, retail, or customer engagement and is enthusiastic about history and community involvement. Candidates with additional experience in nonprofit operations, fundraising, and event planning are encouraged to apply.
This position coordinates the Welcome Center's daily activities in close collaboration with the administrative, curatorial, education, development, and finance staff. The job description is not exhaustive, and duties may evolve based on museum needs.
